Different quantitative approaches (measurements, quality models & method) have been developed to support quality issues in Software Engineering.
Most of those approaches have to cope with several challenge, e.g. the multiplicity of ad-hoc metrics; the lack of clarity about what measurement actually measure, the need of clear connection between measurement and the qualities they are supposed to reflect and the misuse of some measurement outside the context for which they were designed. The emergence of new paradigms such Model-Driven Engineering, Software Product Line, Open-Source & Agile Development represents another challenge facing quantitative approaches and requires them to adapt even before they are completely mature.
After presenting those challenges, the talk introduces an ongoing effort to address them through a general Framework (the Model-Centric Quality Assessment -MoCQA). The framework relies on a quality meta-model used in conjunction with an abstract view of software products highlighting the different composing artifacts. This allows software to be represented in a more flexible and elaborated way and consequently to support more accurate empirical studies.
