Background

In February 2003, Harvard Medical International and the University of Lausanne, with the support of a group of eminent health care professionals, engaged in a partnership to:
  1. offer executive education programmes for European health care professionals
  2. facilitate exchanges between European health care leaders so as to develop new answers to important issues in the field.
A major underpinning for this initiative is to help better understand and rethink health care systems, notably in view of the following:
  • Increasing public expectations for better health care are rising
  • Costs are increasing and most countries are struggling to contain them
  • Rapid acceleration of medical technology
  • Dramatic breakthrough in the medical sciences
The development of programs for pan-European audiences is important as the needs of health professionals across Europe articulate themselves along the same lines: better understand the relationships among key players in the field of health care. While national health care systems differ based on level of economic development, na-tional culture, political organization and history, the same dimensions are pertinent to systems across borders: Cost, Access, Quality.
