The Role of Culture in Entrepreneurial Success and Failure - A Natural Experiment at the Swiss Language Border

Simon Haenni (UNIL)

16 mai 2017  -  12:15-13:30, salle Extranef109

Entrepreneurial activity drives innovation, economic growth, and development. Despite its importance, research on the determinants of entrepreneurship is scarce and persistent differences in entrepreneurial activity between countries remain unexplained. Conventional wisdom suggests the importance of an entrepreneurial culture - an abstract concept that is typically difficult to measure in real world data. In this paper, we exploit the unique cultural contrast at the Swiss language border to identify culture as an important determinant of entrepreneurial activity and success. We find that crossing from the German to the Romance cultural area causes a 14% increase in firm birth rates, while failure rates of these firms increase by 10%. Since policy makers have been increasingly interested in fostering an entrepreneurial environment, these results are relevant in guiding the design of such policies across cultures and countries.
